How often do we stop
to think of what we depend
to survive and thrive
and what’s the Source of all?

Darkness has fallen
temperature dropping,
“suiting up” to go out:
mailbox and firewood.
How often do we stop
to think of what we depend
to survive and thrive
and what’s the Source of all?

Darkness has fallen
temperature dropping,
“suiting up” to go out:
mailbox and firewood.
Walking in outside cold
thinking about a poem
gazing at the stars
darkness and light.
Arms full of firewood
stacking it by the stove;
fire such a wonder
though simple, ubiquitous.
Amazing dancing flames
who can actually describe?
feeling the warmth
appreciating its power.
With most everything
familiarity breeds contempt,
survival depends on it
though we understand it not.
It has a name
qualities to describe,
can be “Googled”
though not comprehended.
How often do we stop
to think of what we depend on
to survive and thrive
and what’s the Source of all?
Earth, fire, water, air
space, mind, intelligence
and identity are all
unfathomable, inconceivable.
So close to us
yet not noticed,
just like our soul and
God, our Origin, Friend.
Part of Krishna consciousness
is becoming conscious
of everything around us
appreciating it as Krishna’s energy.
Think of what surrounds you:
a furnished home, land
amenities, clothes, family–
imagine if they were gone.
Naked and hungry in
a dark forest, what would
be the value of shelter, warmth
food and good company?
As we complain of
what we don’t have
we can stop, giving thanks
appreciating what we do.
And for a devotee
what’s true, lasting treasure?
Krishna, his name, service
and sadhus that give light.
These things are eternal
whereas our reputation,
wealth, possessions, all will
perish, failing to fulfill.
The Vedas call to us:
give up the temporary
go toward the light
wake up from your dream.
So practice the bhakta’s life
chanting Krishna’s name
serving him, and acting in
in a mood of devotion.
Gradually waking up
everything is miraculous
nothing is ordinary but full
of Krishna’s light and life.
