Today I was at the post office for many many hours. Dallas Ratha Yatra is happening on the following Saturday, the 25th. So I was there doing the bulk mail out invite. About 2500 beautiful postcards illustrating Lord Jagannatha, Baladeva, and Subhadra, the festival in Puri, and Dallas.

While passing through their accounting office and back to their mailing department an African American woman, who was in her earlier 50’s, asked me this question, "What is with the attire?" I answered, "I am a Hare Krishna." She didn’t seem to understand what I was saying so I said Hare Krishna again, but still she did not really understand. I then sang the Maha Mantra in the classic melody and then she immediately smiled and said yes. I told her that we are in East Dallas and that we have a wonderful restaurant. She asked what kind of food do we serve. I told her that we do many menus, Chinese, Italian, Mexican, Indian, and that it was all vegetarian food. With a big smile she said, "I am a vegetarian! I have been for for one year."
Wearing clothes that make others remember Krishna is a very effective way to be able to introduce Krishna Consciousnes to others. Hare Krishna

Sikha
"…we must have always our tilak and sikha and there is no compromise for this purpose."
Does this mean one should wear a sikha even if only just entering Krsna Consiousness or am i looking at this to technically and should wait till it feels right?

Sikha
What spiritual signifigance other than just reminding others that your a hare Krsna does the single lock of hair or i think its called a Sikha have, if any? I have only just started getting into Krsna conciensness and would be a pretender if i got a Sikha hair cut but i do want to get one after high school to remind my self of my position in the universe.

Dressing like Devotees

I can really relate to this post. Ive always dressed quite ”alternative” from my goth days through moment i became a devotee.
I love wearing saris when i go to temple, and because i live quite far from my temple in London, i have no choice but to travel in my sari, tilak, japa bag the works.
when im off duty i have a half indian half hippy look to me. I like wearing gopi dresses in the summer, and i feel undressed without a scarf on my head or around my neck.
I get stared at a lot, and to be honest i do get tired of it. I live in an asian area and I actually get people rubber necking me as they go down the street. I sometimes wish i blended in a bit more but to be honest im the kind of person who would look like a hippy fresh out of an ashram if you put me in the most normal clothes you could find – and it does have its advantages.
Even if im in Jeans and tshirts – i always at least wear a bindi ( id love to wear tilak – but its a little too out there for my town )and tulsi beads and I have a badge of krishna and prabhupada on my bag….
im naturally very shy but im slowly devoloping the confidence to approach people i catch staring at me and ask them if they want to know why i look funny… its not easy but ive lost count now of the number of times my bead bag or sari or gopi skirt or bindi has given me the opportunity to tell people about Krishna. I keep leaflets with the maha mantra on me all the time and i try to give them out whereever i can.
when i think about it – im quite amazed how krishna and prabhupad have seen to it that even something as simple as tilak or a sari or a badge can give us the opportunity to spread knowledge of krishna… it just reinforces to me the fact that krishna is everywhere, and we dont need to be in the temple or in full devotee dress to find opportunities to spread the name of krishna…

Yes
That is very good prabhuji. If one can simply remind people of Krsna’s name even by not speaking to them, then they are doing something correctly. The sikha, the tilaka, the dhoti and kurta…all external symbols to remind the world that the Lords servants are among us.
However, let us also not forget what is said in CC, Madhya 16.238
markaṭa-vairāgya nā kara loka dekhanā
yathā-yogya viṣaya bhunja’ anāsakta hanā
"You should not make yourself a showbottle devotee and become a false renunciant. For the time being, enjoy the material world in a befitting way and do not become attached to it."
