I love sayings like this, there is always so much truth in these old sayings, that’s why they keep beings said for hundreds of years, by all different cultures, in various ways.
This particular saying is one of my favorites.
It refers to the concept of getting so involved in “winning” a particular argument, or being right in a particular situation, that even though we may accomplish “winning” that particular time, in essence, winning that time may be the very thing that causes us to “Lose The War”.

The material energy is fighting us all the time on all levels in our attempts at Krsna consciousness. Both for our own personal selves, and also (and especially) our attempts to help others or preach about Krsna, as that would involve more souls that just one (us).
So, when fighting any war, it’s very important to keep focused on the goal, always, and never let ourselves get too wrapped up in any one accomplishment, even devotional accomplishments.
There are always bigger things, larger things, more important things to consider. Everyone has a perspective, everyone is fighting their own battle against the material energy.
The most possibility of winning the war against maya together comes when we keep focused on the goal of delivering as many souls as possible from the material world, and not on the goal of “doing it our way”.

Oppurtunity during fighting the battle
Hare Krisna!!
How about taking oppurtunity to remember Krisna during fighting out a battle with material energy? What I mean is during fighting with Maya if we can remember Krisna, pray to Krisna for strength and keep faith in Him, there would be less chance that we lose focus from our goal.

The Goal
Dear Snehal,
My thoughts since you have asked me in my guest book to comment to your post here:
“So, when fighting any war, it’s very important to keep focused on the goal, always, and never let ourselves get too wrapped up in any one accomplishment, even devotional accomplishments.”

“That’s a very good quote, in fact, when I posted this on my personal blog, right above it, I posted a picture of Krsna, with the title “The Goal”.
So, you’re right, we only see the obstacles when we forget the goal, or take our focus off of it.”
~~~
These two quotes are mine, the first one from the original blog here, the second one from the last comment in this thread.
I think if you will read these you will see I have already said these things 🙂
Of course it’s always nice to have things repeated in various ways, it is interesting to see how different devotees phrase things and hear your personal realizations about it.
another good expression
Hi Navasi. I just returned from Northern California. Reading your interesting blog reminded me of another useful expression: “The operation was successful, but the patient died.”
Your friend in Krishna,
Death
Hi Karnamrita….. wow, it’s good to see you back again!
I can tell you I really missed you here on connect!!!
I hope your trip to Northern California was a nice one.
Yes, that’s a good expression, even better since I think Prabhupad used that one, right?
Same point for sure.
It’s really unfortunate because I’ve seen so many great projects go dead for this very reason.
We need to focus on the goal.
Thanks so much for your comment.
Reminds me of another quote……
“Obstacles are things people see when they take their eyes off their Goal”.
The Goal
That’s a very good quote Krsona, in fact, when I posted this on my personal blog, right above it, I posted a picture of Krsna, with the title “The Goal”.
So, you’re right, we only see the obstacles when we forget the goal, or take our focus off of it.
Thanks for your comment here.
