Mukunda Datta, the son of Vasudeva Datta, was a classmate of Chaitanya Mahaprabhu. Mukunda Datta had a melodious voice, and he knew the intricacies of musical meters and ragas. Mahaprabhu formally accepted sannyasa (the renounced order of life) to the sound of Mukunda Datta’s kirtan.
Today also marks the annual observance of Snana-yatra, or the bathing ceremony of the Deity of Jagannath (pictured at right wearing an elephant mask). Snana-yatra happens prior to the annual Jagannath Ratha-yatra (“chariot festival”).
