Arjuna showed reverential courtesy to Kṛṣṇa out of friendship mixed with knowledge of Him as the Lord. Arjuna thinking Kṛṣṇa as his friend out of want of consideration or out of affection had addressed Him as ‘O Kṛṣṇa, O Yādava, O friend’. By calling Him Kṛṣṇa, and not Śrī Kṛṣṇa, Arjuna had meant that the Lord was the son of Vasudeva, who was not famous, who was a human and a mediocre fighter, whereas he (Arjuna) was famous as the son of the great warrior Pāṇḍu.

By addressing the Lord as Yādava, and not the best of the Yadus, Arjuna had indicated that Kṛṣṇa did not have the king’s position in the Yadu dynasty, whereas he had kingship over the Puru dynasty. Thinking Kṛṣṇa to be his equal, Arjuna had addressed Kṛṣṇa as his friend not because of the greatness of Kṛṣṇa’s forefathers nor because of the reputation of Kṛṣṇa’s family but it was simply based on familiarity. Now Arjuna regretted for having spoken that way intending those meanings. Moreover, while playing, resting, sitting or eating, for joking, Arjuna had treated Kṛṣṇa disrespectfully. By suggestive words, Arjuna had insulted the Lord either while alone or in the presence of others. Arjuna begged forgiveness from Acyuta, for not knowing His greatness, and said that the Lord remained a friend unfailingly even after enduring all the offenses committed against Him due to His inconceivable powers.
