BG Chap 13 – Chapter Summary

Those who see with the eyes of knowledge the difference between the two knowers of the field, the jīva and Paramātmā, as well as their difference from the field, and who also know the process for liberation from prakṛti for the living entities, attain the supreme goal. The process of liberation was discussed earlier as the factors that constitute knowledge, and also the various processes for knowing the Lord such as meditation, jñāna and karma yoga.

One can understand that this body is matter; it can be analyzed with its twenty-four elements. The body is the gross manifestation. And the subtle manifestation is the mind and psychological effects. And the symptoms of life are the interaction of these features. But over and above this, there is the soul, and there is also the Supersoul. The soul and the Supersoul are two. This material world is working by the conjunction of the soul and the twenty-four material elements. Both the jīva and the Lord are situated in the body. The jīva is bound up but is liberated by knowledge of the Lord. One who can see the constitution of the whole material manifestation as this combination of the soul and material elements and can also see the situation of the Supreme Soul becomes eligible for transfer to the spiritual world.

The importance of Kṛṣṇa in this chapter:

13.3 – Kṛṣṇa is the knower in all fields
13.11 – How yoga is construed with bhakti – mayi cānanya yogena – absorbed in me with unalloyed devotion
13.19 – Coming to Kṛṣṇa – mad-bhāvāyopapadyate – the devotee attains to my nature
