One remains in saṁsāra by combination with the guṇas. One becomes liberated by surpassing the guṇas. This is attained by bhakti alone. By applying our intelligence to understanding the nature of the guṇas, we can understand the power of the Supersoul, who controls the modes. If we are free from envy, we will understand our insignificance and surrender to that controller. Thus by the process of bhakti, we can become free from the three modes of material nature.
The importance of Kṛṣṇa in this chapter:
14.2 – Coming to Kṛṣṇa – mama sādharmyam āgatāḥ – having attained a nature like my own

14.19 – One who sees only the guṇas at work and knows the Lord is above them attains Kṛṣṇa’s nature
14.26 – How yoga is construed with bhakti – mām ca yo ‘vyabhicāreṇa bhakti yogena sevate – one who serves me with unfailing bhakti yoga
14.27 – Kṛṣṇa is the foundation of Brahman
