BG Chap 18 – Performing bhakti does not depend on purification first

Kṛṣṇa had described the most confidential knowledge is to think of Him always and become His devotee. One may think that one need first to destroy one’s unlimited sins by following prescribed dharma with atonements, or that one should perform one’s varṇa and āśrama duties properly to perform pure bhakti. Kṛṣṇa answers this by asking us to abandon all dharmas and just surrender unto Him alone, and that He would deliver us from all sinful reactions. This does not mean one should adopt the sannyāsa order because Arjuna, to whom Kṛṣṇa spoke, is not a sannyāsī.

This does not mean one should adopt the sannyāsa order because Arjuna, to whom Kṛṣṇa spoke, is not a sannyāsī. Nor does Kṛṣṇa mean by the word ‘parityajya’ that one can simply give up the results of one’s activities to attain Him. Nor can one argue that one must always perform his prescribed duty because Kṛṣṇa had earlier said that one cannot be inactive even for a moment. The surrendered person is absorbed in worship of the Lord which is also action. It is said that one who has taken shelter of Mukunda has no duties towards demigods, sages or others. Also the Bhāgavatam says that one understands that ordinary religious duties prescribed by the Lord purifies the performer, and also neglect of such duties constitutes a discrepancy in one’s life. But one who takes shelter of the Lord renounces all duties and worships Kṛṣṇa alone. And Kṛṣṇa considers such a person to be the best among all beings.
